. The History of the Computer and Internet

The internet has influenced America in many ways. Charles Babbage, John Mauchly, and J. Presper Eckert are just three men who have immensely helped the computer grow. Charles Babbage, also known as, “The father of the computer,” planned for better machines that would eventually help people with difficult math problems. In 1943 the Harvard Mark 1 computer was invented in the U.S. for the same reason that Charles Babbage had earlier planned. The Harvard Mark 1 computer did not have a screen.
In 1943 the Colossus computer was invented in England. The Reason for the Colossus computer was to read messages written in secret codes. In 1946 John Mauchly joined with J Presper Eckert in inventing the very fast, ENIAC computer. The ENIAC computer could answer any hard problem in only 30 seconds. As the years went on, Mauchly and Eckert continued coming up with ideas for better computers. In 1951, Mauchly and Eckert had built a smaller computer, called UNIVAC.UNIVAC.It had many jobs. One of UNIVAC’s jobs was to count the number of people living in the U.S.
To give you some interesting information about the Computer and Internet’s amazing history, you can read this short timeline:
1969: The U.S. Military Advanced Research Projects Agency develops the first long-distance computer network1971: American Ray Tomlinson creates the first E-mail program1975: Satellites are used to link computer networks in the United States and Britain1984: Domain name system is introduced1989: Scientists in Geneva, Switzerland use a new form of computer technology Hypertext Markup Language invented by Tim Berners-Lee1991: Tim-Berners Lee develops World Wide Web using Hypertext Transfer Markup Language1998: Internet Corporation for Assigned Names-Numbers formed to oversee IP addresses-domain names on Internet2002: Number of people in the world who are connected to the Internet is about 689,000,000
There are a couple of different kinds of internets! The Ethernet and Firewall are two such “internets.”
A Network is two or more computers that are joined in sharing information. The internet allows one of the computers to send data to another and then receive data back from another computer. It also lets the computers use the same printer.
One of the most common types of Internets is called the Ethernet. An Ethernet is a network of PC’s joined by cables within buildings like one might find in a business.A business might have a Local Area Network or {LAN}. LAN’s join all the computers in that business so they connect with one another. This connection is a network called Ethernet because of technology wiring used to connect computers to the network. Each computer uses an Ethernet card built into the computer. Then, an Ethernet cable connects the computer to a network, where another computer, server, stores and shares the data from all of the computers joined to the network.
A Wide Area Network (WAN) connects PC’s that can be many miles apart by using telephone or cable TV lines or satellites. An example of this would be the world wide web.
A Firewall Network is a computer or a group of computers connected to a network, PC, and Internet using hardware or software. Itacts as a type of “protector” to computers on the network by blocking out unsafe data.A Firewall Network does this by studying many pockets of data. The data then follows certain protocols which the Firewall allows the data to get through to a network or computer.
As you can see, the computer and Internet have impacted the whole world by giving us access to tons of information in seconds. The internet is always changing and changing the way we live and learn and do business around the world. There have been so many changes to our lives because of the internet and there will surely be many more to soon come!
